For the first time in five years, Mayo born singer songwriter Jamie Mulrooney, AKA Doppler, has released a new tune! The new single, which was released on the 24th of April, has an accompanying video which was released on the 28th of April.
Doppler is an alternative folk artist who’s sound is usually relaxed and soulful, however ‘A Memory’ is a slightly darker than usual release for the artist.
‘A Memory’, which was originally recorded in 2017, is only being released now as Mulrooney recounted how difficult it was to release music whilst also working a full time job. He was spurred on to release this song to the world when watching an idol of his, Theo Katzman of Vulpeck, post on social media encouraging people to create and release music now, no matter what age they are. Also, upon the sad passing of Bill Withers recently, Doppler discovered that Bill had not released his first album until the age of 34. Both of these things combined gave Doppler the boost he needed to return to the Irish music scene!
He has described this song as being about ‘one side of your brain arguing with the other’. The song is essentially about the struggle to stay positive and how things can so easily change over time. ‘A Memory’ is a very fitting release at the moment, especially considering the current struggles we are facing. This release is a well written one which emcompasses the honesty and emotion of what we are all going through.
Not only is the song an excellent release, but the music video deserves a special mention also. This video is a stop motion one which carries the lyrics for the song the whole way throughout, using a beautiful 1950’s Cadillac as the focal point to the video. The Cadillac brings us on a journey through the desert and drops us off at an open air cinema at the end of the song. The Sharpies and crayons used in the making of this video can be seen in the background as the story progresses.
It’s easy to see that a lot of hard work has went into both the song and the video for ‘A Memory’, and despite Doppler’s qualms of releasing a song after 5 years away, there’s no doubt about it that he has made the right decision to return to the music industry!
