I’ve been following Under Starling for quite some time, since the days of Cider Wasps to be precise, so when I was given the opportunity to review their brand new song ‘ICARUS’, I honestly couldn’t contain my excitement!! If you haven’t heard of Under Starling yet, then 1. Where have you been?! and 2. Let me introduce you to them…
Under Starling are an alternative rock band who are originally from Dungarvan, Co. Waterford. The band consists of brothers Danny and Tommy Dunford as well as Colin Drummey and Alex Pollock. The band’s main influence comes from the likes of The 1975, Biffy Clyro and Kings Of Leon. They have previously played the main stage of BARE in the Woods, supported well known Irish band ‘Fangclub’, and played to sold out shows in venues such as The Loft and Roisin Dubh in Galway. They have just released the first single ‘ICARUS’ from their upcoming self-titled album!
After listening to ICARUS, it’s clear to see how the band have evolved from their earlier days and have gained such a large following on social media. The song is excellently arranged and really shows off lead vocalist Danny’s voice. ICARUS opens with catchy instrumentals that will make you very well aware of how much of an earworm this song is! From opening verses that are filled with anguish, ICARUS explodes into a high energy chorus with the lyrics “And I wont stop, ‘Cause your everything to me, What I’m not, Won’t shake me to my feet“. The end of the song introduces an auto-tuned vocal track which hints at the band exploring new musical territory in the album to come.
Speaking of the release, lead singer Danny says: “As the name suggests, Icarus is a modern take on the famous Greek myth of Icarus and Daedalus – ‘The Fall of Icarus’. The narrative of the song goes back and forth between 2 characters, an optimist wading through life’s oncoming choices, and a pessimist attempting to “clip their wings”, however in the end the optimist would rather crash and burn trying, than to never try at all. The pessimist realizes their efforts are futile as in the optimists’ mind, they’ve already “gone and flown”.
ICARUS is the perfect example of how Under Starling can create such a heartfelt song and then layer it with drums, bass and guitar to make a fantastic alt-rock hit that was born for the radio! The sheer anthemic power and melodic beauty this band possess makes Under Starling a band to keep an eye on for sure! To say I’m excited to hear the rest of their album is an understatement!!
